The Virginia State Police are asking a driver and witnesses to a Richmond Motorcycle Accident to come forward. Reports indicate the crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-95 on Tuesday, April 30, at approximately 4:30 a.m.

According to an article from NBC 12 News, it was raining as the 68-year-old motorcyclist, from Dumfries, was riding his machine in the left lanes of the interstate. The biker suddenly lost control of his machine though as he approached the Fairfax County Parkway and was thrown into the center lane of the highway. Before he could move, he was struck and killed by a passing tractor-trailer combination.

Witnesses were unable to offer a description of the big rig that was involved in the crash. Now, investigators need the public’s help in determining what may have caused the accident to occur. Anyone who may have witnessed the events of that evening have been urged to call state Police with information.

The accident highlights the need for both motorcyclists and motorists alike to be more visible and aware of their surroundings. All vehicles should utilize lights at all times. Motorcyclists should also consider wearing reflective clothing in low light conditions.

Virginia Motorcycle Accident Kills One

by Keith Adkins | March 13th, 2013

March 13, 2013

A study conducted on the major causes of motorcycle accidents, called The Hurt Report, found that a majority of collisions that involve another motor vehicle are the result of that vehicle turning in front of a motorbike. One such Virginia Motorcycle Accident was responsible for killing a motorcyclist and leaving another motorist injured last weekend.

According to NBC 4 News, the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m., along Route 3, outside the town of Gambrills, Virginia. Police reports indicate a 19-year-old female driving a Chevrolet Cobalt was attempting to turn left off of the highway and into a parking lot of Royal Farms; however, she turned in front of a motorcycle driven by a 30-year-old man and did not allow the bike enough time or space to stop.

The two vehicles collided and the impact ejected the motorcyclist from his machine. He was transported to a local trauma center, but died shortly after arrival. The driver of the Cobalt was also taken in to have minor injuries further examined.

While investigators have determined speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash, they say they are continuing to look into what caused the accident to occur.

The Richmond Personal Injury Attorneys with Geoff McDonald & Associates recognize how devastating the loss of a loved one due to an accident can be. That’s why the firm wishes to send their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.

Virginia Motorcycle Accident Responsible For Officer’s Death

by Keith Adkins | January 2nd, 2013

January 2, 2013

A motorcycle accident earlier this week claimed the life of a Prince William County, Virginia, police officer. According to NBC 12 News, the crash happened around 2:00 p.m. Monday on Nokesville Road in Bristow, Virginia.

Reports indicate that the 35-year-old officer was heading south while responding to a call when a minivan attempted to make a left turn in front of the motorcycle. The officer did not have time to stop and the two vehicles collided. The impact of the Virginia Motorcycle Accident was so forceful; the officer was thrown from the motorcycle onto the asphalt.

Rescue crews arrived at the scene and transferred the injured victim to a local trauma center in order to receive treatment; however he died a short time after arrival. No other motorists were injured in the accident.

Investigators say they will continue to examine what contributing factors may have played a contributing role in the accident.

A study called The Hurt Report found that drivers making turns at intersections cause a majority of motorcycle accidents.

The Richmond Personal Injury Lawyers with Geoff McDonald & Associates recognize the dangers of riding motorcycles and say the only way accidents like this can be avoided in the future is by motorcyclists and motorists acknowledging the problem and doing their part to share the road. This means motorcyclists making themselves more visible while those in cars and trucks look twice in both directions before making turns.

Defective Trailer May Be To Blame For Motorcycle Accident

by Keith Adkins | July 18th, 2012

July 18, 2012

A defective trailer attached to a motorcycle may have been the cause of an accident that left one man seriously injured. An article by WSAZ 3 News says that the crash happened just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday on I-77, near the Edens Fork Road exit in Sissonville.

A spokesman for the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy C.D. Lyons, stated that the victim, a man in his fifties from the Richmond-area, was riding his motorcycle as a part of a convoy heading north to Ohio. Deputies say that a malfunction with a trailer his motorcycle was hauling caused him to lose control of the bike and crash. The victim was stabilized by rescue crews and taken to a Charleston, West Virginia, hospital to receive treatment for several broken bones sustained in the Richmond Motorcycle Accident.

According to The Hurt Report, vehicle failure, such as a flat tire, accounts for roughly 3 percent of all motorcycle accidents; however, the results of these crashes can be just as deadly as any other type of motorcycle collision, with 96 percent of all single-vehicle motorcycle accidents result in serious injury.

That is why the Richmond Personal Injury Lawyers with Geoff McDonald and Associates would encourage riders to have a maintenance check and inspection done on you motorcycles before taking them on a long trip in order to prevent a simple defect from causing a deadly collision along the highway.

Ignition Interlocks Devices For All Convicted Drunk Drivers?

by gma | February 8th, 2012

February 8, 2012

Changes could be coming for the way drunk drivers are punished in the state of Virginia, and many believe one particular change could keep all motorists safer. According to reports from CBS 6 News, a bill that is going before a Senate committee Wednesday would require that all DUI offenders have ignition interlock devices installed on their vehicles.

Ignition interlock systems are devices that require the driver to be tested for alcohol in their system by blowing into a tube that is connected to both a blood alcohol content (BAC) analyzer and the ignition of the car. If the driver has alcohol in their system, the vehicle will not start. The system then requires the driver to be randomly tested as the car is driven.

A driver required to use the device can face separate charges if found to be operating a vehicle without the device.

In the state of Virginia currently, only second time DUI offenders are required to have the devices installed on their vehicles.

Proponents of the new law say that requiring the devices acts as a deterrent to drunk driving and states that similar laws requiring their use have helped declines in drunk driving arrests.

The Virginia auto accident attorneys with Geoff McDonald and Associates support making the punishments stricter against the drunk drivers that put all motorists in harm’s way. If you have been hurt by a drunk driver, contact an experienced attorney.

Richmond Cyclist Hit By Minivan

by gma | October 19th, 2011

October 19, 2011

A cyclist was struck by a minivan Tuesday morning in Richmond, Virginia on her way to the Occupy Richmond protest. According to CBS 6 News, the accident happened mid-morning on 8th Street, between Canal and Cary Streets.

Reports say the female cyclist was riding near Kanawha Plaza to participate in the Occupy Richmond protest. A tan minivan struck her and sent her to the asphalt where she lay until paramedics arrived. The victim was only able to move an arm as she was loaded into the ambulance to be taken to a local hospital to be checked for injuries. The driver of the minivan was uninjured in the accident.

Investigators are still working to determine fault in the accident, but reports show that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. This could have proved deadly as the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of injury and fatality.

The Virginia Auto Accident Attorneys with Geoff McDonald & Associates urge cyclists to do their part in maaking roads safer by wearing proper safety gear and obeying traffic laws.
